The final week before Christmas is here, and I began the day the best way I know how—spending quiet time with Jesus. Every morning, I take a moment to thank Him for His blessings and seek His guidance, and today, that time was extra sweet. I reflected on what the next seven days will hold for our family and prayed for moments filled with love, joy, and hope. Hope is the spark that lights the way to Christmas morning.
To officially kick off Christmas week, we started with one of our favorite traditions—a gingerbread house. This year, we went with a Minion-themed house, inspired by my oldest’s love for Bob. Every year, I think, “Should we make this a contest?” But let’s be real—just getting one house decorated with two littles is plenty of fun (and chaos!). To keep the joy alive, it’s easier to decorate one house together. Thankfully, this house came with a front and back door, so everyone got a turn to showcase their candy-decorating skills.
One of my favorite memories as a child was driving around to see Christmas lights every Thanksgiving night. After eating way too much food, my family would bundle up and head out once it got dark. We’d walk or drive around, soaking in the glow of the lights and soaking in the beauty of the season. That tradition was always my personal kickoff to Christmas, a reminder of the hope and magic this time of year brings.
Unfortunately, as life got busier, I lost that sense of wonder. But one of the greatest joys of being a mom is getting to relive that childlike magic through my kids. Rekindle the traditions once lost but found again. So we ended the night with a drive-thru light show, one of those rekindled traditions. Watching their excitement, hearing their endless “Mom, look! Mom, look!” as they point out every glowing character and sparkling tree—it’s nothing short of magical. The lights seemed almost endless, filling the car with awe and laughter. As we sat together, surrounded by the beauty of the lights and the joy on my kids’ faces, I couldn’t help but thank God for this season of hope and the moments that remind us of His light in the darkness.
What about you? Do you have a favorite Christmas tradition with your family? I’d love to hear how you’re kicking off this week of wonder.
